We were very fortunate to be asked to help revive this pair of listed worker’s cottages in Cullybackey, outside Ballymena. The stone and brick houses are in their original form but in need of some care and attention. We developed a design to extend both houses to connect to the former stone outbuildings to the rear, which are referenced in the new design. The extensions are single storey to ensure that the existing house is legible and not overwhelmed by the extensions.
Brick and stone are used to mimic the original materials but with a slightly contemporary edge and detail including herringbone patterns to reflect the chevron pattern to the original front door. Our modelling of the house and analysis of sun-paths allowed us to position the new rooflight and high level clerestory glazing to ensure that the new living spaces are flooded in natural light. The best of both worlds – the character and cosiness of the original house with a bright and airy wing to the rear.
